Some shops which deal in mining explosives in Odumasi, near Konongo in the Ashanti Akyem Municipality of Ashanti Region, have experienced a deadly explosion, causing one death and others sustaining injuries.
Among those who sustained severe injuries are two firefighters who were at the scene.
The fire had broken out in some shops which deal in dynamites and other explosives for local miners. The fire caused an earth-shaking blast which caused destruction to several shops and buildings.
Dozens of persons who were around the area also sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the nearby hospitals. There was a fuel station 50 meters from the area which was caught in the explosion and the fire. Reports are that the cause of the explosion is unknown, however, the driver of the first fire truck lost consciousness when the truck got caught in the impact of the explosion.
The second firefighter also sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the nearby hospital.
Speaking on the situation on Luv FM, the Ashanti Akyem Municipal Fire Commander, Divisional Officer Grade 2, Joe Bryden, revealed that a resident who had attempted to warn the firefighters to retreat from the area had died from the explosion.
“He was trying to tell the firefighters to back off but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed.”
The authorities of the area are yet to find the cause of the explosion. The full extent of casualties and the destruction caused by the explosion are still being assessed and investigated.
