The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that the government has made provision for all first-year tertiary students to not pay any academic fee. This is contained in the 2025 Budget for key policy initiatives and interventions for the country’s economy, under the Mahama-led administration.
The amount the government has allocated to this ‘No-Fess-Stress’ initiative is GHS499.8 million.
“Mr. Speaker, an amount of GHS499.8 million has been allocated for the No-Academic-Fee policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions under the ‘No-Fees-Stress’ initiative,” he said. According to him, this initiative will allow more students to get the chance to receive a higher education.
Speaking on the government’s plan to improve menstrual hygiene amongst female students in both primary and secondary schools, the minister highlighted that the government has made provision to cater for the distribution of free sanitary pads to these female students at the tune of 200 million cedis. “Mr. Speaker, we have allocated an amount of GHS200 million to commence the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.”
Additionally, President Mahama has resolved the funding challenge of the free secondary education by uncapping the GETFund.
“Mr. Speaker, the overreaching concern about free secondary education has been its quality and the absence of a dedicated source of funding. H.E. President John Mahama has resolved the funding challenge by uncapping the GETFund. This makes available dedicated funds for the full financing of free secondary education and free tertiary education for Persons with Disability (PWDs).”
This, he explains, is to promote free and quality education for all.
