The Member of Parliament for Effutu and majority leader for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, has expressed his views on the president-elect John Mahama’s incoming government with a resounding two-third majority in parliament.
During his campaign, Mr. Mahama promised to work with 60 ministers, a number far less that that of the current government.
But Mr. Afenyo Markin believes working with only 60 ministers means that the rest of the NDC MPs would have been rendered redundant.
“I foresee most of the NDC MPs becoming redundant in the Mahama-led administration;” he said on the Joy Fm Morning Show.
He mentioned that of the 60 ministers, some would have to come from parliament because of the constitutional custom. “So they are going to have about 35 or maximum 40 MPs who will be ministers and deputy minsters”, he said. In continuation, he stated that if that number is taken out of the 170 seats they have so far, the NDC will have about 140 MPs who will be redundant in parliament and all they have to do is to be present at parliament for meetings and proceedings and nothing. that they will not be able to go back to their people Ghanaians will see what the NDC will do when they come to power
He continued that these MPs would have demands from their constituents and they would be expected to go to their constituencies, however, there will be little money to implement any other projects as very few of them would have had ministerial appointments.
Honourable Afenyo-Markin’s words are in response to the various ongoing discussions on the aftermath of the elections 2024, where majority of the NPP members of parliament lost their seats, and the NDC saw massive votes. On December 7, 2024, Ghana went to the polls to elect a new president and members of parliament.
The NDC gained a landslide victory while the NPP minsters saw a total defeat. There have been discussions on how the NDC MPs who will now be the majority in next parliament, will behave and change the narrative as they have promised to do so. Ghanaians are sitting cross-legged, looking forward to what possible change this new majority will bring to Ghana.
