The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has given a new and final deadline for the recalling of Diplomatic and Service Passports which were issued during the previous Akuffo-Addo-led administration.
In a public announcement shared on March 10th, the Ministry revealed that following its public announcement on January 15th, 2025, outlining the category of individuals who were affected, there are a total of 404 Diplomatic Passports and 387 Service Passports which remain outstanding from holders who have failed to surrender their passports when the first official publication was made.
The Ministry has stated an official deadline for the defaulting persons to surrender their passports to the Legal and Treaties Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs without fail.
The new and final deadline for the submission is 17th March 2025. The affected persons include Former Ministers and their Spouses, Former Members of Parliament irrespective of their political affiliation, former members of the Council of State and their spouses, former/retired Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts, former Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive Officers of State Institutions, Chairs and members of Boards.
Other categories include Officials of the National Cathedral Project, former Political Ambassadors and their Dependants, Businessmen and Entrepreneurs, former Government Functionaries and all other persons who hold official passports and are currently not serving in any official capacity for the State, and otherwise “holding any position that falls under the requirements of Sections 6 and 7 of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967, NLCD 155.”
According to the Ministry, failure by the people mentioned in the listed categories to surrender their passports by the given deadline will have their passports cancelled and placed on the Stop-Watch List for seizure at any of Ghana’s entry and exit points.
