Kwame Governs Agbodza, the minister-designate for Roads and Highway has advised young persons who want to pursue political careers to get a day job first.
The minister-designate was being vetted by the Parliament’s Vetting Committee on January 20 when he was asked to give his advice to young people who aspire to be politicians in the country.
He advised, “As a young man who wants to enter into politics, you must get a day job that will help you get some money to support yourself.” He lamented that the salary he receives as a member of parliament, is not enough to help him in his day-to-day activities.
Speaking on salaries of MPs, Mr. Agbodza acknowledged, “our salary as Members of Parliament, and my honourable colleagues can attest to that, is not enough. I receive fifteen thousand Ghana cedis a month, and I show it to my constituency members. When I go for my funeral rounds, that money finishes and I am left with the money I make from my consultancies, to help me take care of myself and the family.”
In his final remarks, he advised that it is better for any young aspiring politician to get a good paying job to support him or herself before venturing into politics so he is not stranded.
Mr. Agbodza’s message is a wake-up call to the rising number of all young men and women who aspire to take the political path, on the delusion that politics makes money.
