The Member of Parliament for the Madina Constituency, Francis Xavier Sosu, together with nine ither Members of Parliament, have re-introduced the anti-witchcraft bill in Parliament.
The aim of the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill is to protect vulnerable women in society and put a stop to the occasional witchcraft accusations leveled against women of age, who end up being ousted from communities.
The phenomenon, which is usually seen in the northern region, has been condemned by various human rights groups. Women, especially of old age, are usually placed in what is said to be a witches camp, after suffering violence and accusations of witchcraft. In some instances, the victim loses her life.
In July 2023, Parliament passed the bill, but it was not assented to by Fromer President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo to pass into law. From the onset when the bill was introduced, many non-governmental organisations and social institutions including Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), provided massive support and urged the government to be passed into law.
However, the bill could not be passed into law, following the dissolution of the 8th Parliament.
Honourable Francis Xavier Sosu has rallied with nine other Members of Parliament, including Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor , MP for South Dayi; Comfort Doyoe MP for Ada; Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, MP for Wa East; Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba, MP for Pusiga; Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi MP for Asante-Akim Central; Helen Adjoa Ntoso MP for Krachi West; Dzifa Gomashie, MP for Ketu South; Zuwera Ibrahimah, MP for Salaga South; and Rita Naa Odoley Sowah MP for La-Dadekotopon Constituency.
Mr. Sosu has promised that he will do everything in his power as a representative of the state and the people, to make sure that the bill is passed into law.
According to him, this law will ensure that the dignity of elderly women is protected under Ghana’s constitution and international human rights treaties.
