Reports and images circulating on social media indicate that the statue of former President Akuffo-Addo erected near the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has been destroyed completely.
According to accounts by the police, they had received information about the destruction, but it was too late when they arrived at the premise. “By the time we got there, the damage had already been done.”
This is said to have occurred around 1:30 am today, January 13, 2025, as the whole statue could be seen toppled, with the head chopped off. The culprits remain unknown.
This follows an earlier destruction attempt by some unknown individuals when a huge hole was punged in the left leg of the statue. However, it was quickly repaired.
Since its erection to honour him, former president Akuffo-Addo’s statue became a point of controversy, with many inhabitants of the location calling for its removal. Many touted the erection of the statue a self-glorification act, as they beileve it was ordered by the former president himself, even in the face of what has been described as an extremely poor performance by his administration.
Residents within the location of the statue had called for an erection of a statue of a different person, who they believe is deserving of it other than the former president.
Following the first destruction attempt, police said investigations had been commenced to indentify the perpetrators. But there has not been any update since then.
