The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a press statement, immediately recalling the Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte beverage, over safety concerns.
The Tetra Pak (250ml) and Canned (330ml Pétillante) variants are the specific variants of the Grand Chateaux Sangria Forte beverage that are being recalled.
According to the FDA, the decision is necessary due to the issue with safety and regulatory issues with the circulation and sale of the product. The products which were circulated in the Ghanaian market and advertised on social media were noted to be unregistered.
Moreover, the operations of the importer of the said product are in violation of Sections 97, 98, and 103 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which requires that all food and beverage products be registered before distribution. The non-registration of food items by the FDA before distribution and sale is illegal.
The Authority also noted that the packaging and size of the drink is highly deceptive and misleading, and can therefore cause children to accidentally ingest alcohol, posing great danger to their safety and health.
As next steps, the FDA has advised all consumers to refrain from purchasing or consuming the products. It also cautioned retailers and wholesalers to immediately halt the distribution and sale of the product being recalled. Finally, it instructed that all stocks should be returned to the nearest outlets of Cave and Garden Ghana Limited and the FDA’s offices nationwide.
Meanwhile, the importer has been sanctioned, and regulatory measures are being enforced. The FDA has assured the general public, of its commitment to the health and safety of citizens and urges the public to report any instances of the sale of these products via its communication channels.
