Alhaji Mutanka Mubarak, the Minister of Interior, has through an Executive Instrument, issued new curfew hours for Bawku and its surrounding environments, in the Upper East Region. According to the new hours, the curfew starts from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. starting from March 3, 2025.
In a statement, the Minister mentioned that the government of Ghana is calling on all Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and the people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace. He also mentioned that there is a total ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region, from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon.
The statement also issued a caution that any persons found with arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted. the minister of Interior had recently met with the Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku, to discuss and review the security situation in Bawku.
Dr. Omane Boamah made reference to President Mahama’s assurance to solve the conflict through traditional means. Recounting the discussions held in the meeting through a statement titled, “An Important Meeting Update on Bawku”, the Minister of Defence said, “Today, I had the privilege of meeting with Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief of Defence Staff, Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, and other Members of Parliament at the Ministry of Defence.”
Revealing their discussion, Dr. Boamah highlighted, “We reviewed the current security situation relating to the dispute in Bawku. As President John Dramani Mahama has assured the people, we will continue to follow the comprehensive roadmap to resolve this conflict through traditional means.” Expressing his dedication to resolving the conflict, the Minister of Defense stated emphatically, “We must restore peace and stability in Bawku, and other communities, and I am determined to support that cause.”
