Reports have emerged about attacks on Israel by the Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement. The incident which commenced on the early hours of Saturday 7th September 2023 has led to the death of over 200 people so far.
According to accounts, the attack came as a surprise to Israel as there have been no preliminary signs of war.
But following the heinous incidents, a stage of emergency has been declared with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating that the country is “at war.” He also stressed that the “enemy will pay a price” for what has happened.
Videos circulating on various social media platforms, particularly X, formerly known as Twitter display scenes where a woman who had sustained injuries on various parts of her body was abducted by the Hamas. Reports indicate that soldiers are also being abducted.
Cause of the sudden attacks are still yet to be made known.
Meanwhile, Israel has responded to the attack by carrying out airstrikes.
Death toll now in Israel according to its national rescue services reveal about 100 deaths and over 100 people with injuries.
Authorities in Gaza, the base of the Hamas have also reported about 200 deaths following Israel’s attack response.
An account by the Deutsche Welle (DW), a German news network disclosed that Israel’s airstrike on Gaza as a retaliation “intensified into the night, flattening several residential buildings in giant explosions, including a 14-story tower that held dozens of apartments as well as Hamas offices.”
How other countries have responded.
President of the United States, Joe Biden has promised Israel “a rock solid and unwavering” support, adding that the United States will never fail to have Israel’s back.
He however warned that “This is not a moment for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks.”
Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock has lamented that the Hamas’ attack now moves the region farther from peace. The violence displayed so far needs a political solution, she added.
This development is now the second major war ongoing in the world after the Russo-Ukrainian war which still looks far from being resolved despite different types of help from European countries and the US to support Ukraine.
The US, who has made several promises to Ukraine in order to help it muscle up against the nuclear powers of Russia will now have to split its arms to also reach out to Israel.
However, the US government looks like it will be under intense pressure and scrutiny from its public following yet another promise made by its president to a country in distress despite also facing economic challenges.
