The Founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has been reported dead at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.
The news comes a day after her death at the hospital and just few weeks to Ghana’s general election. According to her family, she passed away on October 28, 2024 but there is no information yet on what might have caused it.
Akua Donkor was amongst the vetted and approved candidates to contest in the December general election, securing the number three position on the ballot paper.
The 72 year old made her way into the political scene first as the Assemblywoman for Herman in the Ashanti region, and later embarked on her first quest to become president in the 2012 election. She was known for her constant use of the local language in carrying her campaign messages across, a trait rarely scene in other candidates.
Despite facing a number of significant challenges, Akua was able to ground her name in Ghana’s political dispensation.
Amongst some of her challenges were her disqualification in the 2012 election and her party’s headquarters being destroyed by fire in 2016, which again, resulted in her disqualification.
Akua Donkor was also known for being outspoken on national issues, especially on Ghana’s recent illegal mining crisis.
Ghanaians have been issuing condolences since the news of her death broke out.
